It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear friend and colleague, Harry Foster, on August 15 in Victoria. Following a brief illness, Harry died peacefully in his sleep on August 15, just shy of his 66th birthday, which is September 1.
He was one of the giants in orthomolecular medicine, with boundless enthusiasm, a prolific gift of writing, and a researcher who made unique contributions in our understanding of health and disease. Harry was a researcher with a soaring scientific mind: only he could combine his expertise in geography, epidemiology and orthomolecular medicine to create new insights into nutritional medicine. A fixture at so many of our Orthomolecular Medicine Today Conferences, Harry's eagerly anticipated presentations were always fresh and original as he explored the complex relationships between genetic inheritance, health and the "nutritional geographies" of the world. Harry's accomplishments as a writer, researcher and educator are many and cover a broad range, including serving on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine for 15 years, and on the board of directors for the International Schizophrenia Foundation for 13 years. He authored or edited over 300 publications and wrote six books in the "What Really Causes…" series, including those on AIDS, Alzheimer’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Schizophrenia, SIDS, and Breast Cancer.
Harry's business partners are working to get a notice up on their foundation website, including a guest registry.
A public celebration of Harry's life will take place on the afternoon of October 27th at the University Club on the University of Victoria campus. Contact the Department of Geography for further details (info@mail.geog.uvic.ca, 250-721-7327). As part of the Orthomolecular Medicine community, we now have another great loss to contend with - two too many in just three months. Please take a moment to sign our In Memoriam guestbook if you have memories of Harold to share with others.
